In The New Drum , the tongue in cheek meets the heartfelt for a drink and wakes up with a wedding ring on its finger. Yes, on the one hand excellent song writing, on the other, often warped executions with an endearing out of tune quality and a mischievous smirk… perhaps half the brain is saying “I love thee” while the other half is making the left hand cross its fingers behind the back. “Clouds”: an idyll offset by a gnarly guitar lead; “I wonder”: a wistful love song twisted by a distorted and deranged vocalist, adding humor and creeping unease to the simple sentiment; “Staden”: a casiotone mash note haunted by crawling dissonance from beyond; “The Frog”: a flawless pop song with blue and black coloration, a bruised sound palette to add fiery tension to the otherwise straightforward sad/sweet delivery… and so on and so forth. Not so much a method or a style, nor a songwriting formula, The New Drum finds a way to be sincere and personal inside the candy wrapper cage of pop, while gently mocking itself in the act. So you see, you can burn your candle at both ends… you just need to know how to tilt it. (Review By Eduardo Padilla)
En The New Drum, la ironía se reúne con el sentimiento para echar un trago y amanece con un anillo de bodas en el dedo. Por un lado, excelentes canciones, por el otro, ejecuciones que salen chuecas con frecuencia, entrañablemente desafinadas, y como portando una sonrisilla malvada… tal vez medio cerebro dice “Os amo señora mía” mientras que la otra mitad está haciendo que la mano izquierda cruce los dedos detrás de la espalda. “Clouds”: idilio deformado por medio de guitarras nudosas; “I wonder”: soñadora canción de amor tergiversada por la voz que la canta, cosa que le añade humor y una cierta sensación de malestar al llano sentimiento; “Staden”: un casiotone enamoradizo perseguido por disonancias del más allá; “The frog”: perfecta canción pop coloreada de negro y azul, paleta sónica de hematoma que le añade violenta tensión a lo que de otra forma sería planamente dulce/triste… y así sucesivamente. No se trata de un método o estilo, ni de una fórmula compositiva, más bien The New Drum encuentra una forma de ser sincero y personal dentro de la jaula-confitura del pop, y de paso se burla gentilmente de su propio reflejo. Así que como pueden ver, la vela si puede encenderse por ambos polos… solo es cuestión de saber como inclinarla. (Reseña Por Eduardo Padilla )
